If you've used ChatGPT to make images — a birthday card concept, a logo idea, something you sent your family — you might not have known what the underlying tool was called. You clicked something, typed what you wanted, and a picture appeared. One of the main ways that worked was the DALL-E GPT, which is a special-purpose ChatGPT space (think of it like a dedicated room inside ChatGPT, built specifically for pictures). Today, August 30, 2026, OpenAI shut it down.

This is not a disaster. The replacement is actually better. But if you have images stored in that tool's conversation history that you care about — the ones you made over the last few years and never saved — the window to retrieve them may have just closed.

What actually changed

Here is the simplest version.

DALL-E (pronounced "dally") is the name of OpenAI's image creation technology, which launched in 2021. Over four years it got better: DALL-E 2, then DALL-E 3. When OpenAI introduced custom ChatGPT tools in late 2023, one of the first was the official DALL-E GPT — a dedicated space inside ChatGPT for making pictures, one of the oldest such tools OpenAI ever shipped.

Today that space is gone. OpenAI replaced it with ChatGPT Images, which runs on a newer generation of image models called gpt-image-1 and gpt-image-1-mini. Think of it as the same capability — generate pictures by typing what you want — now built more directly into the main ChatGPT interface you already use, rather than sitting in a separate corner of it.

Two things that did not change:

Image generation in ChatGPT is still available. You can still ask ChatGPT to make pictures. That capability is not gone.

Custom tools you built with image generation still work. The only thing retired is OpenAI's own official DALL-E GPT — not the broader ability to create ChatGPT tools with image capabilities.

One thing that is unclear: whether images you generated in the DALL-E GPT in old chat conversations will remain accessible. OpenAI recommends downloading anything you want to keep, but didn't explain exactly what happens to those old conversations after today. If you're reading this on August 30, that message has a somewhat unfortunate timestamp. Check your chat history and save anything important.

What's real, what deserves a side-eye

What's actually fine:

The replacement is better. ChatGPT Images, running on gpt-image-1, produces cleaner and more detailed results than DALL-E 3 did. The new models are better at following complex instructions, better at text inside images, and better at photorealistic styles. This is a genuine upgrade dressed up as a product discontinuation.

The cleanup makes sense. The DALL-E API for developers was already retired earlier in 2026 as part of the same wind-down. OpenAI has been consolidating its older image surfaces throughout the year. Keeping parallel image products maintained costs engineering resources that could go into the new system. The decision is reasonable.

User-created tools survive. This is worth repeating: if someone you know built a custom ChatGPT tool with image generation — or if your company uses one — it still works. The official DALL-E GPT is gone; the underlying capability is not.

What deserves a side-eye:

The vague communication about stored images. "Download what you want to keep" is helpful advice, but OpenAI never told users explicitly what would happen to their old DALL-E GPT conversations after today. Will the chat history remain viewable? Will the images in it disappear? They should have been clearer. The ambiguity makes a normal product transition feel shadier than it probably is.

The short notice for ordinary users. If you don't read AI news — and most people don't — today might be the first you're hearing about any of this. August 30 was the deadline. For some people it already passed.

What to do about it

• Check your ChatGPT history for old images. If you've used the DALL-E GPT before, open your chat history and look for conversations with it. Right-click or long-press any image you care about to save it. Do this today.
• Switch to ChatGPT Images for future image requests. In the main ChatGPT interface, look for the image button or just type a request to generate an image. It works — and the results are better than the old DALL-E GPT.
• If you built a custom tool with image generation, keep using it. Your custom ChatGPT tools are not affected by this retirement. Only OpenAI's own official DALL-E GPT is gone.
• Nothing urgent if you don't have stored images you need. For most people, this transition is invisible in practice. The new system works the same way; it just does it better.
